 Madrid is back as a Candidate City to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Lozd is the favorite city to be the cultural capital of Europe 2016, too. Melina Mercouri, actress, singer, and political activist. Minister of Culture, she proposed the Cultural Capital of Europe ideal within the framework of cultural policy of the European Community. Athens inaugurated this institution in 1985. The title of the European Capital of Culture in 2016 will be awarded to one Polish and one Spanish city. Lodz applied for the title of the European Capital of Culture in 2016. Expressing the cultural ambitions of the city is not only a chance to present city’s artistic potential. It is an undeniable proof of Lodz development, the city which chose business and culture in a dynamic metropolis in the centre of Europe. Lodz is in its prime. Like many years ago, the city attracts numerous investors from Poland and abroad. Many companies including: Dell, Gillette, Merloni, Coca-Cola, Metro AG and LG Group settled here thanks to rich scientific and technical infrastructure and thanks to qualified human resources, mainly graduates of Lodz universities. Fujitsu is planning an extensive investment; IT centre is going to be set up in Lodz. Year after year, there are more tourists coming here. |
